Radiation dosimetry in the Leksell Gamma Knife treatment room

چکیده
The medical technology company Elekta is the manufacturer of the worldwide used Leksell Gamma Knife, LGK, an instrument specially designed for treating brain disorders. Sweden today has two LGKs treating patients, one of an older model and one newer. Both are owned by the Karolinska Hospital and placed in Stockholm. The radioactive sources of Cobalt in the machine lead to an enhanced radiation level in the treatment room and it is therefore important to have sufficient shielding in the surrounding walls. In this Master of Science Thesis the radiation in the LGK treatment room of both these machines has been measured, using a sodium iodide scintillator detector. The absorbed doses are calculated by integrating the resulting energy spectra from the detectorregistered particles. A Monte Carlo simulation program is used to simulate photon transport through the LGK machine. The absorbed doses and detector count rates are calculated and compared to the experimental values. The results show the differences between the photon transport in the two models, and that the radiation leakage is much higher in the older model. The comparison between the simulated results and the experimental results shows excellent agreement on the backside of the machine. This suggests a simulation method applicable for particle transport through the LGK.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of a new rotating gamma system for stereotactic radiosurgery by comparison with a well accepted system. METHODS AND MATERIALS A novel gamma unit for stereotactic radiosurgery has been developed and distributed to 15 hospitals in China. The unit contains 30 cobalt-60 gamma radiation sources with initial activity of 200 Ci (7...
متن کاملStudy of scattered photons from the collimator system of Leksell Gamma Knife using the EGS4 Monte Carlo code.
In the algorithm of Leksell GAMMAPLAN (the treatment planning software of Leksell Gamma Knife), scattered photons from the collimator system are presumed to have negligible effects on the Gamma Knife dosimetry. In this study, we used the EGS4 Monte Carlo (MC) technique to study the scattered photons coming out of the single beam channel of Leksell Gamma Knife. The PRESTA (Parameter Reduced Elec...
متن کاملMAGAT gel and EBT2 film‐based dosimetry for evaluating source plugging‐based treatment plan in Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery
This work illustrates a procedure to assess the overall accuracy associated with Gamma Knife treatment planning using plugging. The main role of source plugging or blocking is to create dose falloff in the junction between a target and a critical structure. We report the use of MAGAT gel dosimeter for verification of an experimental treatment plan based on plugging. The polymer gel contained in...

The polymer gel-Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) dosimetry technique was employed to evaluate the mechanical and dose delivery accuracy in Leksell gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of multiple targets. Two different polymer gel dosimeter formulations that have been reported in the literature were prepared in-house. A plan for the treatment of four brain metastases (targets...
